Joery Matthys is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, where he is part of the team Policing Studies. He concentrates mostly on the governance of policing, including cooperation with other public and private actors.

Joery Matthys (1979) is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs. He completed his joint PhD in Law in 2009 from Ghent University and Universita Di Torino, after having obtained degrees in Law (Ghent University), Law & Economy (Ghent University/Erasmus University Rotterdam), and Criminology (Ghent University). Before joining Leiden University, he worked for the Public Governance Institute at KU Leuven. In 2012, he moved to the Institute of Public Administration at Leiden University, until he joined the Institute of Security and Global Affairs in 2016.

In regard to education, Joery has experience teaching about research methods, public management, public-private collaboration in the field of security, and rule of law and security. He is currently involved in courses on security actors and policing studies. He has also supervised both bachelor and master theses over the past years, and he is the coordinator for the Academic Excellence Programme within the Master Crisis and Security Management. Concerning research, he has conducted research on multi-level governance, quality management in the private security sector, accountability of security actors, crisis management, public-private coordination in the security sector, and policing research.
