More information about Ivanka Spruijt

Professional experience

Ivanka obtained her BSc degree in Biology at Utrecht University in November 2018; with all-round knowledge on animal behaviour & cognition, (behavioural) ecology, evolution, nature management & conservation, statistics and various research techniques. Her bachelor’s thesis discussed the opportunities for the application of animal behaviour studies in species conservation.

In January 2022, Ivanka obtained her MSc degree in Conservation & Restoration Ecology at Radboud University. In her first internship research project she compared the effects of active and passive reforestation methods after 12 years of recovery in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Her final MSc research project focused on the characterization of wild bee communities on flower dikes near Nijmegen, and evaluation of potential determinants of community structure and ecology.

In March 2022, Ivanka started her PhD research within the Bioclock consortium. She will be dividing her time between the Environmental Biology department of CML and the department of Evolutionary and Population biology of IBED at the University of Amsterdam.

Research topic

Ivanka is studying the effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on plant-insect interactions under the supervision of Peter van Bodegom (CML), Astrid Groot (UvA), and Gerard Oostermeijer (UvA). This research involves experimental (lab)work and field work to gain insight into the changes ALAN can cause in an urban trophic cascade on both a physiological and an ecological level.
