Biography

Irith Kist is since May 2020 connected to eLaw as an external PhD candidate. Title of the research: “The limits of control by patients over their personal data.

Irith Kist completed her academic degrees in Law, specialization international law and Tax Law, specialization International and European Tax Law, and Political Sciences, specialization International Relations, at the University of Amsterdam. Furthermore, she is a sworn and certified court interpreter and legal translator in the English language. Irith pursued her professional career as lecturer, program manager, ombudsman and student counselor at the Royal Netherlands Naval College, University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Secondary Vocational Education in Amsterdam/ Flevoland, and the Dutch Olympic Committee. Prior to these experiences, she served as a diplomat with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Irith continued her career as data protection officer in the preparatory phase of the General Data Protection Regulation, both with the Secondary Vocational Education in Amsterdam/ Flevoland, the Municipality of The Hague, and as of 2018, with the Netherlands Cancer Institute. In March 2020, she started as external PhD candidate at Leyden University.

Research

Irith investigates the limits of individual control by patients over their personal data. She will elaborate on the following research question: to which extent, and under which conditions, should patients have control over their personal health data, in particular to enhance (further) scientific research and the promotion of health care? The research will be conducted in the English language, including a summary in the Dutch language.
