Research
The Dutch involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade has been studied extensively, but little is known about the economic impact of this trade on the Dutch economy in the eighteenth century. I use the well-preserved archives of the Middelburgsche Commercie Compagnie (MCC), the largest private Dutch company involved in the slave trade, to study the local impact of slave trading on the Dutch port city of Middelburg and its surrounding region. This PhD-project is a part of the larger NWO-funded project 'Slaves, Commodities and Logistics': the direct and indirect, the immediate and long-term economic impact of eighteenth-century Dutch Republic Transatlantic slave-based activities.
Curriculum vitae
Gerhard de Kok received a master’s degree in history from Leiden University in 2012 (cum laude). In 2011 and 2012 he was employed full-time as a research assistant for the NWO-project Dutch-Atlantic Connections. In 2014 he started his PhD-research on the economic impact of the Dutch involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade on the Dutch Republic.
