Geoffrey obtained a master degree in Maritime History at Leiden University, after writing a thesis on 18th century Dutch merchant shipping between the Low Countries and the African west coast. He specialized in this subject, since this type of bilateral trade had gained far less attention by the general public than the well-known triangular (slave) trade. Further, Geoffrey has held positions as support staff member at the Erasmus School of Economics in Rotterdam, at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, before working at Leiden University
