Biomedical Data Sciences

The department of Biomedical Data Sciences consists of 4 research sections. Advanced Data Management (ADM) is focused on high quality data acquisition and data management; Molecular Epidemiology is focused on unravelling biological mechanisms, including rheumatology and ageing; Medical Statistics is focused on the development and application of biostatistical methods; and Medical Decision Making is focused on the description and evaluation of medical decisions. Professor Steyerberg is primarily involved with the latter 2 sections (Medical Statistics and Medical Decision Making). His research concentrates on prediction. He has applied advanced regression analysis and related techniques in many clinical domains. Areas of interest include biostatistics, cost-effectiveness, and decision analysis. Contemporary research themes have his attention, including comparative effectiveness, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Value-based Health Care, and Precision Medicine.

Professor Steyerberg’s methodological research concentrates on the role of prediction models and randomized clinical trials for better decision making in individual patients.
