Bacterial infections

The research focuses on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of bacterial infections, with three objectives; 1) characterization of antibiotic resistant bacteria to study the spread of these bacteria in humans and animals, 2) research of virulence factors for new therapeutic targets and 3) research into resistance mechanisms to develop other treatment regimens. Many of these bacteria reside in the gastrointestinal tract and research into the composition of this bacterial flora (microbiota) also has a prominent place.

Academic career

Ed J. Kuijper is medical doctor and completed his education in Medical Microbiology in Amsterdam University in 1987. He obtained his PhD in 1989 on 'Aeromonas-associated diarrhea in the Netherlands' after a one year stay at the CDC in Atlanta. During the past 10 years, dr. Kuijper and members of his group obtained various grants from national and European organizations for scientific and clinical research on the area of C. difficile infections and infections with antibiotic resistant bacteria. In 2017, he developed the 'Microbiota Platform in LUMC' with many collaborations within and outside LUMC. He has more than 400 publications in peer reviewed journals and chapters in books. Between 2009 and 2016, dr. E.J. Kuijper has been  president of the European Study Group on Clostridium difficile (ESCGD), which has been co-opted by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). Currently, he leads an new European Study group 'Host-microbiota interactions in human and animal medicine'.
