Demet Yazilitas is a postdoc at the Department Science Communication & Society of Leiden University. Her research interests include education, social mobility and inequality. She holds a master’s degree in European and Internation Law from the Radboud University Nijmegen and a PhD in Sociology from the VU University Amsterdam and has a prior professional background in policy analysis and research.
Demet is involved as a postdoc in two research projects on 'Broadening Youth Participation in STEM Learning' , funded by NWO. The first project aims to better understand the effects of tutoring on increasing the interest of children from low socioeconomic background in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The second project aims to design and develop educational activities for underrepresented youth in STEM, including females, ethnic minorities and students from a low socioeeconomic background, in order to have a more diverse and inclusive STEM-population in the Netherlands in the Netherlands. These activities are co-created with educational professionals and is joint project with the department of Astronomy of the Unversity Leiden, NIKHEF, the department of Astonomy of the University of Amsterdam, VHTO and ECHO.
