Daniëlla Dam-de Jong is Professor of International Sustainable Development Law at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. She is also a member of the management board of the Grotius Centre, a member of the Dutch Advisory Committee on Public International Law (CAVV), Deputy Chair of the IUCN WCEL Specialist Group on Environmental Security and Conflict Law and one of the Editors-in-Chief of the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. She is a Visiting Professor at Vermont Law School (U.S.) and Nagasaki University (Japan). She also supervises the doctoral network sessions at The Hague Academy of International Law (Winter courses).

Education

Daniëlla Dam-de Jong holds a Certificat (mention bien) in French language of the University of Lausanne, an MA in French language and culture from the VU University Amsterdam, an LL.M. from the VU University Amsterdam, and a PhD from Leiden University.

Career

Daniëlla Dam-de Jong joined Leiden University in 2005 as a policy officer at Campus The Hague and a research assistant at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. She obtained an NWO grant for her PhD in 2007. After completing her PhD in 2013, she worked as assistant professor and associate professor respectively at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies.

Research areas and interests

Daniëlla Dam-de Jong is a general international lawyer, with special expertise in the field of sustainable development. Her research focuses on natural resources governance with an emphasis on questions relating to intragenerational and intergenerational equity. She has a special interest in connections between sustainable development and international peace & security, including in a multidisciplinary setting (environmental peacebuilding).

Daniëlla Dam-de Jong has written and advised extensively on sustainable development and on its connections with international peace and security. Her publications include a monograph on International Law and Governance of Natural Resources in Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations with Cambridge University Press in 2015 and a Research Handbook on International Law and Environmental Peacebuilding (co-edited with dr. Britta Sjöstedt from Lund University, 2023).

Educational activities

Daniëlla Dam-de Jong teaches the courses ‘Public International Law’ and ‘Contemporary Issues of Public International Law’ in the Master Program in Public International Law (Reg.), which she also co-directs.
