Dr. Christian Wirth (lic. iur. HSG, MIA ANU) is a University Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Leiden Institute of Area Studies (LIAS). Previously working for the Federal Government of Switzerland, he obtained a Ph.D. in International Studies from Waseda University in 2011. Dr. Wirth has studied Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, researched at Griffith, Korea, Peking, Waseda, and Yonsei Universities, and taught at Sophia University and Tohoku University.
Dr. Wirth focuses on contemporary Chinese, Japanese and Korean politics. He is particularly interested in East Asian regional cooperation and integration, nationalism and collective memory, maritime politics, and the consequences of socio-economic change for the conduct of international politics.
