Bart Labuschagne (Pretoria, 1962) studied Law, history, and philosophy at Groningen University from 1981 until 1988. From 1987-1988, he was Student-assistant Philosophy of law, and from 1988 until 1993 Teaching and research assistant (PhD-fellow) Philosophy of law at the Law Faculty, Groningen University. Since 1993 he is Lecturer in Philosophy of law, at Leiden University.

In 1995 he got his Doctorate with a dissertation titled Religious freedom and not established religions. A human rights and legal philosophical study about the meaning and limits of religious tolerance (in Dutch).

He takes an interest in the philosophical aspects of the relationship between (foundations of) law, religion, politics, and ethics and has devoted several publications and books on this topic. He is interested in Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, and Habermas. He teaches these and other great thinkers as well, both on Bachelor- and Master level.
