Recognition of Subaltern Identities through Films: An Analysis of Kurdish Cinema
My PhD research explores the sociopolitical dynamics, both visual and aural, of Kurdish cinema. Focusing on the promise of Kurdish cinema for the recognition of Kurdish identity, I problematize the subject of identity politics and examine theories of the cinematic subject through a comparative analysis of Kurdish films. I further aim to posit the audio- visual nature of cinema as a critical and often overlooked vocabulary for the development of social and political theory.
Overall, my research offers a reading of Kurdish cinema as both inseparable from political histories of hegemonic state practices and the embedded nationalisms of film industries, and as a critical site for examining crucial theoretical questions in social and political thought tied to the subject of identity politics and the intricacies of the politics of recognition.
