Gabina Aurora Pérez Jimenez is a native speaker of the Mixtec language (Sahin Sau) of Mexico with a long experience in the study of Mixtec culture and history.

She has participated in the emancipatory movement of Mexican indigenous teachers for bilingual-bicultural education (1980-1988), and acted as a representative of this movement in several sessions of the working group on indigenous peoples of the U.N. in Geneva.

She was a student of the program 'Law, Development and Social Justice' (Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, 1985) and a member of the board of the Dutch foundation "MUSIRO" under the presidency of Prof. Dr. Bas de Gaay Fortman (1986-89).
In addition she has acted as a consultant for the Italian non-governmental organisation CRIC in several developmental projects in Mexico (1991-1998).

Besides being a guest lecturer on Mixtec language and culture in the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University, she has cooperated in several Leiden projects:

  1. the editing and interpretation of ancient Mexican pictorial manuscripts (the series "Codices Mexicanos" of the Fondo de Cultura Economica, published in Mexico 1991-1997)
  2. the research project "Mixtec City-States" (financed by the Netherlands Foundation for Scientific Research, NWO, 2000-2005).
  3. the research project "Sahin Sau, an endangered language in Southern Mexico" (also financed by the Netherlands Foundation for Scientific Research, NWO, 2005-2010).

At present she participates actively in the ERC-funded project 'Time in Intercultural Context: the indigenous calendars of Mexico and Guatemala'. She reinforces the reflection on a decolonizing approach to the tangible and intangible heritage of Indigenous Peoples, while at the same time continuing to work on a large contextual dictionary of Sahin Sau (Chalcatongo Mixtec).
