I am curious to examine deeper on how Indonesians, who are historically born to be bilingualist, acquire second languages such as English. There is a marked absence of research on vowel acquisition, especially on speech production, of Indonesian learners of English. None of these works have addressed the central question on how Indonesian learners of English with the diversity of provincial languages and variety of potentially influence of L1 produce English long-short vowels. It would be very fascinating to look at how provincial languages, in this case Javanese and Sundanese, have influenced the acquisition of second language (L2). A study on a regional language would be interesting in order to shape a thorough understanding on any possible impact of regional languages to English standard language learning. Yet, without such understanding, Javanese and Sundanese learners of English are left with an inadequate analysis that creates the condition where the duration of target like vowel could not be established since L2 should compete with more exposure to TL. This study is going remedy this gap in the literature by examining vowel production of Javanese and Sundanese Learners of English and native English speakers in order to more fully investigating the effect of L1 to TL vowel production.
