Rapid developments in human genetics have provided an impressive new vista. Finally, after many generations, hopeful future perspectives are available (with the inclusion of treatment options) for those at risk for Huntington's disease and many other neurodegenerative disorders. Predictive DNA-testing enhances the individual potential to plan and control personal life. Hope proves to be no longer an illusion. Huntington's disease has been a fascinating model for the multidisciplinary study of inherited diseases with onset later in life. Insight in the development of personality under the influence of both genetic susceptibility and environmental conditions is within reach. Never before the fundamental, medical and social sciences had such common fields of scientific interest.
