Anneke Koning is working as a PhD candidate at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology at Leiden University.

She graduated summa cum laude in social sciences at University College Utrecht and completed her master’s degree in criminological research at Cambridge University, where she was awarded the Manuel López-Rey (proxime accessit) prize for best overall performance in the program. She subsequently worked in policy at the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice and in human rights diplomacy at the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the United Nations in Geneva. She lectured in criminology at Leiden University for over two years before the start of her PhD.

Research

Since February 2017 Annekec Koning is conducting her doctoral research project on measures to combat transnational child sexual abuse, tentatively entitled ‘Child sex tourism: A systematic examination of responses against a global problem’. The research is funded by a Research Talent Award from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Annekes broader research interests include sexual violence against children, human trafficking, transnational and cybercrime, and safety policy.

Teaching

Anneke Koning lectures in undergraduate and graduate classes of the Criminology program at Leiden University. Her teaching tasks include an undergraduate course on law enforcement and policing, as well as thesis supervision.
