Alice’s research is focussed on the distribution, sources and ecological effects of microplastics in freshwater systems.
Alice qualified with a BSc in Biology in 2009 from the University of Sussex (UK) and an MSc in Oceanography in 2012 from the University of Southampton (UK). Following this she worked as a field scientist at an aquatic environmental consultancy from 2013-2014 before starting her current employment as an ecotoxicologist at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), UK in 2014. She registered as a PhD student at the Conservation Biology department of CML in April 2016 and is carrying out her PhD in conjunction with her research at CEH.
Alice’s research is focussed on the distribution, sources and ecological effects of microplastics in freshwater systems. She has carried out environmental studies to determine abundance and sources of microplastics within sediments and freshwater fish, and is currently running laboratory studies to investigate the effects of microplastics on organisms, including how the presence of microplastics may influence the bioaccumulation and toxicity of hydrophobic organic pollutants. Organisms worked on include larvae of the midge Chironomus sancticaroli, the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis and the water flea Daphnia magna.
