Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is the specialty that is responsible for the perioperative care of the patient. Dahan’s research is aimed at:

Treatment of acute and chronic pain
Novel strategies are being developed with special emphasis of optimizing pharmacotherapy. For example, new tools have been construed that enables detection of optimal drug effect combined with minimized side effect. Such tools (utility functions) are important in the design and development of new drugs.

Optimizing perioperative outcome
Dahan studies new anesthesia techniques that will further improve patient outcome. For example, deep neuromuscular block and the implementation of new monitor techniques (eg. nociception monitors). All research is performed in close cooperation with the surgeon.

Academic career

Dahan received his MD at the VuMC Amsterdam (1986) and his PhD in 1990 at Leiden University. The title of his dissertation was The ventilatory response to CO2 and O2 in man: methods and implications. Part of the research was performed in the US (UCLA).

After he became an anesthesiologist (1995), he worked at Leiden University Medical Center as anesthesiologist and founded the Anesthesia & Pain Reseacrh Unit. Research was and is performed in several facilities including the animal research lab, the cardiorespiratory lab, the pain lab and the OR and PACU.

Dahan was appointed as professor is 2004 and gave his inaugural speecg in 2005 (May 25, entitled Bij Kennis, or Awake with Wisdom).

Dahan is member of several prestigious American and European editorial boards, such as the of the US journals Anesthesiology, Pain and European Journal European Journal of Pain.

Dahan is member of several international advisory boards relating to perioperative care and opioids and is co-author of several internal guidelines.

Prizes and honourable appointments

Dahan received in 2014 the CR Stephen award and gave the CR Stephen Lecture at WashU (St. Louis).
