Afshin Ellian is Professor of Jurisprudence. He is also Head of the Department Jurisprudence and Deputy Academic Director of the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law at Leiden University. Professor Ellian has some poetry books to his name.

Professor Afshin Ellian was born in Tehran (Iran) on 27 February 1966. In the Netherlands Ellian studied at Tilburg University, at that time named the Catholic University of Brabant. In 1996 he graduated in public international law, criminal law and philosophy. In 2003 he obtained his PhD at this university on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa in the framework of a political transition. In the same year Ellian became Associate Professor of Jurisprudence at Leiden University. In 2005 he became Professor of Social cohesion, citizenship and multiculturalism at Leiden University.

He is currently Professor of Jurisprudence, Head of the Department Jurisprudence and Deputy Academic Director of the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law at Leiden Law School, Leiden University. He wrote, as an opinion former, columns for NRC Handelsblad and still writes for elsevier.nl. Furthermore, Ellian has published articles in international newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and Le Figaro.
