Adriaan in 't Groen
Currently, Adriaan in 't Groen is fellow at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University. Adriaan in ’t Groen was the first director of the Dual PhD Centre of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs from mid 2008 to May 2016.
Adriaan in 't Groen is retired. He is still connected to the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs as a guest employee. As fellow he will focus on researching the policy history of education and research in The Netherlands.
Adriaan in ’t Groen has been the first director of the Dual PhD Centre of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs from mid 2008 to May 2016, of which the Chamber of Commerce The Hague, VNO/NCW, public institutions and regional knowledge institutions are partners. He was in charge of the dual dissertation programme, which is shaped in cooperation with these partners and the professors and graduate schools of Leiden University.
On 29 June 2009 Adriaan in ‘t Groen defended his own dissertation at Leiden University, entitled 'The Turn and Humboldts Inheritance: Beyond Utopia' (De Wende en Humboldts erfenis: de utopie voorbij). In this dissertation he reports on his research in Berlin into the consequences of extreme political change in the shape of German reunification for the education and research of professors at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. One of the central themes of his dissertation is the term Bildung: "Bildung durch Wissenschaft" (Wilhelm von Humboldt, 1767-1835). This main idea is also the foundation of the dual PhD centre. After his dissertation he concentrates his research on 'Bildung', focusing on the effect of Bildung on individuals, the society and the state. He combined this research with his directorship position: the dual setting of the centre. He worked on his dissertation next to carrying out his responsibilities as director of University Development at Leiden University Administration and Central Services. His personal experiences in combining work and PhD research were incorporated into the dual dissertation programme. As the Director of University Development he was present at the start of (amongst others) the establishment of the Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, Academy of Arts, Pre-University College, LAPP-Top (programme for talented VWO pupils), the Leiden Visitor Centre and the Bureau of City Partners Leiden (Stichting Stadspartners Leiden), of which he was the first director of the board.
Adriaan in ’t Groen has a multidisciplinary professional practice. His first education was architecture at Technical College (HTS). He finished this (without a diploma) on the topic of several houses built in his place of birth, Dongen. He spent his HTS practice year at the student movement HTS-Unie and at the national newspaper HTS-er. As staff member of what was then the League of Teachers in Tertiary Education ( Bond van Docenten Tertiair Onderwijs) he was involved in the creation of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Professional Education ( HBO-raad) in 1976. He became their first Head of Communications. In this period he was also responsible for the Centre for Business and Education ( Centrum Bedrijfsleven Onderwijs (CBO)). This centre was created from professional practice by companies and the higher technical colleges. For the first time ‘practice days’ were organised on a large scale, during which teachers visited companies. Then, in 1985, he became head of the Communications department of what was then called the Ministry of Education and
Sciences and spokesman for Minister W.J. Deetman. After he left the Ministry he was active as Director of Institutional Development working on the profile of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He used some unorthodox means for this, one of which is the ‘facade project’: through the use of visual arts the interaction between Amsterdam and the city university UvA was improved. He did this in cooperation with, amongst others, Wim Beeren, former director of the Stedelijk Museum. The vision and work of artists such Karel Appel, Lawrence Weiner and Jozeph Kosuth were used in this project. A second example is the use of the 'Werktheater' to determine the culture concerning supervision and communication within the organization. During this Amsterdam period he obtained his Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the Netherlands School of Public Administration ( Nederlandse School voor Openbaar Bestuur NSOB) and the deans Prof. Dr. R.J. in ’t Veld and Prof. Dr. U. Rosenthal. During this programme he spent his foreign stay exploring the transformation processes which occurred at several universities in Berlin, Budapest and Prague after the fall of the Iron Curtain. This led to the 1997 publication of “After the Wall: Transformation Processes at Mid-European Universities” ( Na de val van de Muur; Transformatieprocessen bij Midden-Europese universiteiten). This was to form the basis of his later dissertation on the consequences of the German reunification for the professional practice of professors at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Together with several master students he dedicated his graduation project to inter-municipal cooperative relations in Walcheren. This led to the publication of “The Road to Walcheren” ( De weg naar Walcheren). In 2007 he was head of the editorial board compiling a collection of essays published on the dilemmas in research and society, “Knowledge in Ferment”.
