Sjoerd Huisman started working as an assistant professor in 2018. He studied Archaeology (BA), Biology (BSc) and Statistics (MSc) at Leiden University. He is also working on a PhD in Bioinformatics at Delft University of Technology. His thesis is on methodology to find the genetic basis of brain diseases, while making use of gene activity data measured in the brains of healthy individuals. For example, he uses the information on the activity (expression) of genes in the brain to make groups of genes with a common function, and then tries to find if there are any genes associated with migraine that cluster in these groups. In this way he looked for molecular functions and brain regions involved in migraine.

Sjoerd teaches in the bachelor's programme Psychology (Perspective on Career Planning), the master's programme Psychology (Applied Data Analysis) and the master's programme Statistical Science for the Life and Behavioural Sciences (Multivariate analysis and multidimensional data analysis).
