PhD Writing Room

Do you find writing hard? Do you struggle to make room for writing in your busy schedule? Do you put it off and hide behind more urgent (easier) tasks?

If so, you’re not alone! Most researchers will identify with these struggles. Yet writing is a large part of a research career and essential to your PhD trajectory.

The literature on writing practices shows that writers tend to be most productive if they write regularly, set attainable goals, and write with others.

To help you write, the Graduate School has organized the PhD Writing Room: fortnightly co-writing sessions for PhDs at the FSW. These are open, structured sessions guided by Maria Sherwood-Smith. You are welcome to attend whenever you can. It is important, though, to commit to attend the full session in a given week. The sessions consist of an opening, goal-setting discussion and several structured blocks of writing time, with regular breaks. Maria facilitates by keeping time and giving individual advice if needed.
