All research at Leiden University is organised into institutes. To do justice to the wide spectrum of research (and consequently teaching) that comes from these, you will find descriptions of all the Leiden institutes on these pages.

The Institute Council consists of scientists, lecturers, support staff and students. They provide a forum for discussing the institute’s current situation and its prospects.

The Europa Institute of Leiden University is one of the oldest academic institutes specialised in the law of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights; it was established in 1957, the same year as the European Economic Community itself.

The Mathematical Institute is responsible for the research and education in mathematics and statistics at Leiden University.

The 'Leids Papyrologisch Instituut' is the only Dutch institute that studies both Greek (and Latin) and Demotic and Abnormal-Hieratic papyri. The members of our staff publish texts from collections all over the world, including our own collection.

History is being taught at Leiden University since the days of Justus Lipsius [1547-1606]. In 1860, following the appointment of Robert Fruin as Leiden professor of Dutch History, modern historical investigation started in the Netherlands.

The CML Institute's Council (IC) consist of seven persons representing staff and students who are working in our institute. The council advises the management team on a broad range of topics that concern all CML staff members: financial matters, research programs, education and strategic outlines.
