Mathematical Institute
Education
The Mathematical Institute offers a bachelor programme in Mathematics and master programmes in Mathematics and in Statistical Science. The institute also teaches many mathematics and statistics courses in other academic programmes of the university. About 65 PhD students work on a thesis in a small team or closely supervised by one of the professors.
The Mathematical Institute is committed to provide meaningful, rigorous and quality education in a friendly environment, at all academic levels. Its programs in mathematics and statistics span the widths of these fields, from applied to fundamental, and from algebra to data science. To offer its students still additional choices the Mathematical Institute cooperates with several other institutes and consortia.
External evaluation
The mathematics programs are very positively evaluated, for contents, quality of professors, general training, and organisation, both by national review committees and by students. The bachelor program was awarded the predicate "topopleiding" in 2016 and in 2017.
Cooperation
The bachelor's programme in Mathematics is set up as a joint program with Delft University, while the master's programme is linked to Mastermath, a cooperation of all Dutch universities. For the master's specialisation in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory the Mathematical Institute has a unique cooperation with several European universities through the Algant consortium. Finally the master in Statistics and Data Science is a joint program of the Mathematical Institute, the Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of Leiden University.
International environment
The main language for the bachelor's programme in Mathematics is Dutch, although switches to communication in English are common. The master's programmes are taught in English, and attended by students from all over the world. Within the specialisation offered by the Algant consortium parttime study at a foreign university is mandatory, while exchange study is possible in all programs. More than half of the PhD students in the Mathematical Institute are from abroad.
Theses
