While the Southern part of present-day Ghana was strongly integrated into European colonial empires since early modern times, the North wasn’t until the early twentieth century. The Northern part of present-day Ghana was organized in polities with economies based on warfare, slavery, and slave trade. I propose to investigate the history and heritage of warfare and slavery in places that are nowadays remembered as slave markets or in function as chiefly palaces.
