Gone are the days when nation states can act domestically and internationally without consideration of global factors. The pressures that emerge from a globalizing world impact nations and domestic actors differently depending on the issue at hand and the specifics on the ground. However, all nations and their leaders, as well as the regional groups they belong to, need to consider global factors when choosing policies and designing institutions. At the same time, policy choices and political movements at the national, regional and global level shape the aforementioned, cross-border processes.

Members of this cluster focus on political economy issues, examining the roles of states and markets, regulation, political institutions, rules and norms in national and international settings and the way people act given these conditions. Some of the members of this cluster concentrate on a particular geographic area (whether it be an area in Africa, Asia, Europe or Latin America). Others consider issues that transcend continents, focusing instead on financial regulation, the set up and working of democratic institutions, migration of people, economic and political development, and more. Their scholarship draws on diverse theoretical traditions from rationalist to constructivist, and drawing on theories in comparative politics, international political economy and international relations. Members also employ a wide range of empirical methodologies that draw on quantitative and qualitative traditions, including formal modelling, statistics, comparative case studies and process-tracing, and ethnographic methods. Members of this cluster are also active in the Leiden University Centre for International Relations (LUCIR) and the Leiden Political Economy Group (L-PEG).
