Some of the more environmentally problematic applications of lead have been reduced. However, there is still discussion about whether or not to strive for a further reduction of exposure to lead. There is uncertainty about the long-term risks of accumulation of lead in society and the potential for diffuse releases from various applications and from waste management processes. The aim of this project was to estimate emissions from lead products-in-use for the past, the present and the future and assess the development of toxicological risks associated with these products. Some emissions are expected to rise in future, especially related to corrosion from stocks of lead in plating and ammunition, and related to waste management. This may give rise to increased health risks in the future. Build-up of concentration in agricultural soils due to closed-loop recycling has not been investigated, but might also be problematical.
