Armin Cuyvers interviewed on BRN Radio on Brexit and speech May: ‘the UK has no viable solution’

On 1 March Armin Cuvyers was interviewed on BNR national radio on Brexit, the Draft Withdrawal Agreement of the Commission and the key Brexit speech by Theresa May planned for 2 March.

His main conclusion: May has no viable solutions, including for Northern-Ireland. She is trapped between irreconcilable promises to leave the customs union and to avoid a hard border. Consequently, she will either have to embrace a hard but brutal Brexit to (temporarily) retain national power, or make way for a new leader to try and secure a soft Brexit. Such a softer Brexit, however, will require UK membership of a customs union with the EU. De facto, this will mean the UK remains bound by EU laws and regulations, and there will be no real Brexit let alone ‘taking back control’, even if the UK will lose its influence over those same EU laws.
