Public Lecture and Workshop on Algorithmic Systems: intersectionality, fairness, accountability

On Tuesday December 19, Museum Boerhaave, the Lorentz Center and eLaw organize a public lecture on ‘Fairness and Accountability of Sociotechnical Algorithmic Systems’.

The lecture will be given by Danah Boyd from New York. She is a Microsoft researcher and founder of the research institute Data & Society. In her lecture she will examine a wide variety of issues that emerge around socially-oriented technologies that leverage big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The lecture (in English) is open to the public and starts at 17:00 in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave. Entrance is free, but registration is required through the Boerhaave Museum.

The public lecture is held in connection to the workshop Intersectionality and Algorithmic Discrimination: Intersecting Disciplinary Perspectives, which takes place at the Lorentz center in Leiden from 18 through 22 December. This workshop brings together a stellar line-up of international scholars from both the intersectionality and algorithmic discrimination communities. The aim is to combine insights from social sciences and humanities, technology, law and ethics to reflect on the complexity of intersecting power systems in society and which role data-analytics plays (and can play) in this. More information on the workshop can be found at the Lorentz Center website.

This workshop is co-organized by researchers Francien Dechesne and Jenneke Evers (eLaw), who study responsible innovation with data-analytics in the NWO-project SCALES (together with partners Alliander, Target Holding and the Dutch police).  The workshop has received financial support from the KNAW Congressubsidiefonds and the Leids University Fund (LUF).
