eLaw workshop at the Big Data Value Forum in Versailles

On November 22nd 2017 eLaw co-organized with partners of the e-SIDES project a workshop on the ethical, legal and socio-economic implications of big data.

Karolina La Fors
Bart Custers

The workshop took place within the framework of the European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) held from the 21st till 23rd of November in Versailles (Palais de Congrès), France and co-organized by the Big Data Value Association and the European Commission. Within the workshop the newest challenges of cutting-edge industrial applications of privacy-preserving big data technologies of European ICT projects were discussed by representatives of the industry, policy, academia and more. During the workshop from the side of eLaw the latest results of the e-SIDES project have been discussed and we used the workshop to put our initial findings into perspective by inventorying the newest challenges practitioners, system developers and others connected to privacy-preserving big data technologies currently face.

A commonality among stakeholders’ challenges was the fact that although the issues they face depend on the context, most of the issues reach beyond privacy. Many issues have to do with how agreements are made between data providers (data brokerage) and data users (companies using data for analysis). For instance, beyond the legal limitations, economic interests, business objectives or trustworthiness of partners all steer how access control is designed.  These insights will be used for our future deliverables on privacy-preserving technologies.
