Sustainable Business Battle wins Van Bergen Prize

The Sustainable Business Battle was launched less than a year ago, but it has already won several prizes. Last week, the organisers received the Green Trophy and now they can also add the Van Bergen Prize to their awards.

The prize is presented every year at the Diversity symposium at Leiden University. The aim of the award is to stimulate new initiatives to promote contacts between Dutch and international students, the wish expressed by former Vice-President of the Executive Board, Joris van Bergen, who set up the Van Bergen Fund when he retired in 2005.

This year the jury of the Van Bergen Fund received no fewer than twelve submissions from all parts of the University, including the Hitting the mark plan by Timothy Stikkelorum and TEDx Leiden University – Building Bridges that was set up by eight motivated students. However, in the final event, the choice was made in favour of the plan proposed by Sarah Alford, Mart Lubben, Friso Postma and Eveline Kantor: The Sustainable Business Battle Leiden & The Hague.

The jury praised this initiative because of the original way in which different teams from the Netherlands and international students work together with Dutch companies to encourge them to work more sustainably. The interdisciplinary and intercultural components of this project were the main impetus for the jury to award the prize to the Sustainable Business Battle.
