International Arbitration Course at the Peace Palace in The Hague

After a successful pilot in 2016, the second edition of the International Arbitration Course took place at the end of August. The course is a tripartite collaboration between the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, the Department of Civil Law of Leiden Law School and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

With 41 enthusiastic participants from 26 different countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle-East and North- and South America, this year's edition of the International Arbitration Training Course was just as successful as the first edition.

The course, jointly developed and coordinated by Prof. dr. Eric De Brabandere, Professor of International Dispute Settlement Law at the Grotius Centre, Prof. dr. Henk Snijders, Honorary Professor of Civil Law and Civil Procedure at the Department of Civil Law, and mr. Brooks Daly, Deputy Secretary-General at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, aims to give young professionals a broad, but in-depth insight into international arbitration, covering International Commercial Arbitration, Inter-State Arbitration and Investor-State Arbitration.
Since the course enhances theoretical knowledge and practical skills, it puts a spotlight on UNCITRAL Arbitration and includes a Witness Examination Workshop, which was given by Ms. Wendy Miles QC, vice president of the ICC Court of Arbitration and partner at Debevoise, this year.

The yearly Hague Arbitration Lecture is also organized in the framework of the International Arbitration Course. This year the Hague Arbitration Lecture was delivered by Professor Jan Paulsson, Michael Klein Distinguished Scholar Chair at the University of Miami and partner at Three Crowns, on the topic ‘Things You Might Not Learn in the Library’.
