Kaya Peerdeman wins award for article on analgesia

Health psychologist Kaya Peerdeman has won the article award of the Postgraduate School For Research and Education in Experimental Psychopathology (EPP) for the best academic paper in 2015-2016. Published in European Journal of Pain on 19 April 2017.

Kaya Peerdeman

Kaya Peerdeman and co-authors Antoinette van Laarhoven, Danielle Bartels, Madelon Peters and Andrea Evers present the data of two experimental studies. These studies showed that mental imagery of reduced pain (i.e., response imagery), prior to actually experiencing pain, could induce analgesia. These effects were mediated by the pain intensity participants expected to experience (i.e., response expectancies). Peerdeman received the award for the article entitled ‘Placebo-like analgesia via response imagery’ (European Journal of Pain)

Placebo

This research extends research on the mechanisms of placebo effects, by showing that placebo-like expectancy effects on pain can be induced not only by instructions, direct experience and observation of other people, but also by mental imagery of a response.

EPP article award

Every year, the Dutch Flemish Postgraduate School For Research and Education in Experimental Psychopathology (EPP) organizes a publication contest for PhD students. The award for the best academic paper is handed out to a promising young researcher. This year, the EPP article contest was organised for the 20th time.
