EU grant for Bart Custers

The European Commission has granted budget for the project e-SIDES (ethical and societal implications of data science). Dr. Bart Custers, associate professor and head of research at eLaw, the Center for Law and Digital Technologies, has written the proposal with two partner organizations within the EU Horizon 2020 framework program.

The main objective of e-SIDES is to complement research on privacy-preserving big data technologies, by analyzing, mapping and clearly identifying the main societal and ethical challenges emerging from the adoption of big data technologies. eLaw will deal with the ethical and legal issues, Fraunhofer (Germany) will deal with the societal and economic issues and IDC (Italy) will organize a series of nine workshops to set up and organize a sustainable dialogue between industry, research and social actors. This will result in conclusions and recommendations for the best way to ultimately build confidence of citizens and businesses towards big data and the data economy. The project will start in January 2017 and take three years.
