Go study abroad!
Are you keen to immerse yourself in a new culture, broaden your horizons and make friends for life? If so, come to the Study Abroad Festival on Friday afternoon 14 October.
At the festival you can discover which country is best for you. You can also hear about all the practical matters involved in studying abroad: how to register, what the conditions are and how much your foreign adventure will cost. And finally, you'll get information about accommodation, grants, insurances, internships and language tests.
Hands-on experts
Different hands-on experts will be available to tell you all about their own experiences. You'll see that you won't be thrown in at the deep end, because so many Leiden students have gone before you.
Noor in Hangzhou
‘I studied traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) at Zheijang University in Hangzhou, China. If you get the chance to study abroad, I'd really advise you to do it. You'll come into contact with a new culture, fabulous food and a new outlook. It was a challenge to live independently in a new environment but I learned a lot about myself. What will stay with me longest are the fun afternoons with exciting searches for food and then eating them together with my house mates. Every weekend we'd visit a different place; that really was the finishing touch to the study week.'

‘I studied criminology at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. It's a fantastic life experience. The adventure abroad is all about exploring the city and the country, meeting new people and experiencing everyday life in a country with a different culture. You make friends for life. There are a lot of international students in Melbourne, so you get to know people from all over the world. It's great; you'll always have places to stay abroad.'
Charlot in Oslo
‘I'm currently studying Political Science and Sociology in Oslo, Norway. I'm also learning Norwegian. Studying abroad is a very special experience. A lot of other international students are starting a new stage in their lives at the same time as you; that's quite a connection. My best experience so far has been climbing the magnificent Store Smørstabbtind mountain in the Jotunheimen National Park. The mountain is 2.2 km high and really makes an impression on a Dutch girl like me! To reach the mountain my friends and I first had to cross an ice-cold river. Then there was quite a hike, and a lot of climbing. It took six hours but eventually we made it to the summit. My message to other students would be: give yourself that adventure, and go abroad!’
Suzanne in Malaysia
‘I went to Malaysian Borneo for my Biology studies. It was my chance to experience in real life the theories about the tropical rain forest. It was a wonderful experience. I came face to face with an orangutan with a baby. But best of all was the research in the caves. We had to worm our way through narrow passageways to study the insects at the back of the cave, and all the time there were bats flying around your head.'
