Political Science launches new bachelor’s specialisation in The Hague

In September 2017 the Institute of Political Science (Leiden University) will launch a new bachelor’s specialisation: International Relations and Organisations (IRO). It will be taught in English and be based in the city of The Hague. The three-year IRO bachelor's specialisation is aimed at international, as well as internationally-oriented Dutch students seeking to specialise in international relations and organisations from a social science perspective.

As is the case with the Institute’s current programmes, students can count on high level education by qualified, involved lecturers. What is new for the IRO bachelor’s specialisation is that all work will be done in English. This enables the creation of an international learning environment, where students from all over the world will feel comfortable and at home. The Institute of Political Science has ample experience in conducting programmes in The Hague; Leiden University has become an integral part of the city’s social and intellectual life. The Hague, fittingly, is called the International Capital of Peace and Justice, and it hosts several important international organisations.

Addition to existing bachelor’s programmes

The Dutch bachelor’s programmes, Politicologie and the specialisation Internationale Betrekkingen en Organisaties (IBO), remain in Leiden. Current and future students in these programmes will continue to study and finalise their programmes in Leiden. All lectures and facilities for these students will be Leiden based.

The IRO specialisation can therefore be regarded as an addition to the existing Leiden University political science curriculum, offering more choice and creating opportunities for students from abroad. The preparations are in full swing and students can apply.
