2016 John Ziman Award for Leiden Manifesto

The European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) has awarded its 2016 John Ziman Award for ‘a significant innovative cooperation in a venture to promote public interaction with science and technology’ to the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics. This manifesto is led by Diana Hicks (Georgia Institute of Technology), and Paul Wouters (CWTS).

The Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics’, originally published in Nature in 2015, provides 10 principles for guiding research evaluation. The Manifesto is not only a Nature article, but also a website (where you can find the Manifesto translated into 12 languages), a video, and a blog – thus facilitating ongoing discussion on this important topic.

EASST president Fred Steward stated that the manifesto "is designed to influence evaluation practice rather than simply to critique it. This is an impressive effort to take specialized scientometric knowledge into a wider policy arena". "Presented as a destillation of best practice it is at the same time informed by science & technology studies concepts about knowledge. It emphasises situatedness, in terms of different cognitive domains and research missions as well as the wider socioeconomic, national and regional context. It also engages with performativity and the way in which indicators can change the knowledge system itself."
