Multitalented psychology students Tessa and Naomi run relay race in Rio

Tessa van Schagen and Naomi Sedney know exactly how to combine their Psychology study with top-level sport. Both students are running in the 4 x 100 metre relay at the Olympic Games. Van Schagen: 'Fellow students think it's great that I'm going to Rio.'

Training six days a week, lectures five days a week

How do you keep up your training for Rio while at the same time  working for a positive study advice (BSA)? Van Schagen, bachelor's student of Psychology, has managed to do just that. 'I'm right on schedule, so it's going well,' says Van Schagen. 'It's certainly do-able'.  Leiden University lets her miss four lectures per block, whereas other students are only allowed to miss two.

'At university you learn independently'

'My study programme was easy to organise and adapt to my training schedule,' commented Van Schagen. 'There are times when it's training, a lecture and then more  training. Then it gets a bit hectic.' She's hoping to break her personal record in the 200 metres in Rio. There cold even be a place in the finals of the relay race. And after the Games?  'Back to lectures.'

Psychologists passing on the baton

They have already won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 metre race. During the European Championship in July 2016 the Leiden psychology students with Jamile Samuel and Dafne Schippers ran a Dutch record of 42.04. Was the race in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium the perfect preparation for the Olympic Games in Rio? Sedney: 'We're aiming for gold in Rio. We want to keep getting faster. Our time of 42.04 is good; we're almost into 41 seconds.'
