Wim van den Doel member of Executive Board of NWO

Professor Wim van den Doel, dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University, has been appointed member of the Executive Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) with effect from 1 January 2017.

Van den Doel will relinquish his role as dean in Leiden with effect from 1 January but will retain his post as Professor of Contemporary History in Leiden.

About Wim van den Doel

Wim van den Doel (1962) was interim dean of the Faculty of Arts from 2007, and in 2008 was apointed dean of the then new Faculty of Humanities. Under his leadership the arts faculty was merged with a number of small faculties to form the present faculty comprising a number of large, strong institutes. Researchers at these institutes study the languages, cultures and societies of the whole world in the present day and in the past. During the period of Van den Doel's deanship the number of students at the faculty has increased strongly. In the Times Higher Education ranking in 2015 Arts & Humanities at Leiden University held 17th position worldwide, 6th in Europe and 1st outside the English-speaking world.

Strategy, management and policy

In his position as member of the Executive Board of NWO, Van den Doel will be responsible for strategy, management and policy at NWO, including programming, instrumentation and budget allocation. As chairman of the new Social and Humanities (SGW) domain, he will further shape the merger of the present areas of Social and Behaviourial Sciences and Humanities.
