Judi Mesman to become the new Dean of Leiden University College The Hague
The Executive Board has appointed Professor Judi Mesman Dean of Leiden University College The Hague with effect from 1 July 2016. The Board of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences congratulates Judi Mesman with this appointment.
Mesman will succeed Professor Jos Schaeken. After three years as Dean of LUC, Schaeken will resume his focus on conducting research and teaching in his specialist field of Slavic and Baltic languages.
Role of culture and gender
Judi Mesman is Professor of Diversity in Parenting and Development, and is also Scientific Director of the Institute of Education and Child Studies at Leiden University. She studied psychology in Leiden and obtained her doctorate at Erasmus University. Mesman conducts pioneering research in such fields as the different influences that fathers and mothers have on the upbringing of their children.
Global challenges
Kutsal Yesilkagit, Dean of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, commented on behalf of the Board of University College: ‘We are delighted that Judi Mesman will be joining us as the successor to Jos Schaeken, who has run the University College for three years with enormous commitment and enthusiasm. Mesman is an eminent scientist, and besides her management tasks at University College, she will make an important contribution to the further development of research and teaching in the area of gender, diversity and culture within our faculty. Her presence here means that the faculty will gain new expertise in the field of global challenges and will be able to forge even stronger links between science and practice.’
Experienced manager
‘Judi Mesman is an experienced manager and she brings with her broad experience in the field of research and teaching in the social sciences,’ commented Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Rector Magnificus of Leiden University. ‘ We are confident that, in the international environment of our University College, she will further strengthen the relationship between the Leiden disciplines and the city of The Hague.'
