LLM Students debate with EU Commissioner Malmström

On Wednesday 3 February, Giovanni Gruni and Thomas Weber and a group of ten students from the LLM European Law programme attended a TV debate with EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström in Amsterdam.

The debate concerned TTIP (‘Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership’), the free-trade agreement between the EU and the USA. The treaty is still under negotiation, but has already been the source of much controversy and scholarly debate.

The event took the form of a Q&A session with students and NGO representatives, in which there was ample opportunity to ask questions. Commissioner Malmström, responsible for the negotiations on behalf of the European Commission, answered questions on the agreement together with vice-mayor of Amsterdam Kajsa Ollongren.

The event was broadcasted on Dutch national television, in ‘EenVandaag’ (programme in Dutch; Malmström speaks in english from 08:50 onwards). It can also be rewatched in its entirety here.

The Europa Institute also hosted an international conference on TTIP in December 2015, together with the Leiden University College Research Centre.
