Hazelhoff Guest Lecture on 11 February by Wim Mijs: 'A future without banks?'

On 11 February 2016, the Hazelhoff Centre for Financial Law organises its tenth Hazelhoff Guest Lecture. The lecture ‘A future without banks?’ will be given by Wim Mijs, Chief Executive of the European Banking Federation (EBF) and alumnus of Universiteit Leiden.

In this Hazelhoff Guest Lecture, Wim Mijs will provide the audience with his reflections on the future social functions of banks. In 2015, the European Commission adopted an action plan in order to create a Capital Markets Union. This plan aims to expand the role of the financial markets, which leaves the impression that the Commission attempts to reduce the dominance of the banking sector. At the same time, the traditional banking business model has come under fire as a result of new financial regulation and increased pressure of digitalization of society. A future without banks, is it possible?

In this lecture, there will be ample opportunity to ask questions. The lecture will conclude with a reception, sponsored by SBR Leiden.
