Want to do scientific research at Lowlands?
The Lowlands pop festival is inviting scientists to make proposals for research at this year's festival (19 to 21 August).
Unique field of research
Lowlands is a three-day festival where around 55,000 people step outside their everyday lives and briefly form a special community, a place where new contacts and friendships are made. This makes the festival a unique field of research for scientists. Lowlands, BKB and New Scientist invite scientists to submit a research proposal for Lowlands Science.
Criteria
The possibilities are limitless. What would you like to research at Lowlands? Proposals have to meet the following criteria:
- The research has to be societally and scientifically relevant
- The research has to be visible and/or relevant for the Lowlands public
- The research has to be described in a maximum of 1,500 words
The closing date for proposals is Friday 1 April (see box for more information).
Lowlands Science
Lowlands Science had its very successful debut in 2015. There was a large lab where visitors were the subject of experiments by, for example, Leiden University and the LUMC, the TU Delft and the University of Amsterdam. Scientists carried out research on the presence of the 'adventure gene' among visitors and the possibilities of literally synchronising brain waves. Using virtual tools, the public was also able to experience how it is to be really old. The festival took place in baking-hot temperatures, but the extreme heat was no deterrent to the long queues of people wanting to take part in the research.
Lectures
The festival also provides a platform for short lectures: Lowland University. At the 2013 festival, Leiden stem cell professor Christine Mummery described to the enormous interest of the public how stem cells can repair damaged organs. The line-up of scientists for this year has not yet been confirmed.
