Spatial technology and community engagement to protect Alaska Native heritage landscapes
Southwest Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta is a culturally rich and biodiverse landscape in a state of constant flux. This is the homeland of the Yupik people, but climate-change driven erosion poses an existential threat to their heritage and traditional ways of life. Digital survey methods are key for helping these communities protect their cultural landscapes — specialised sensors mounted on unpiloted aerial vehicles are a particularly effective option in terms of affordability and ease of building local capacity.
