The ‘Vereniging Rembrandt’: supporting acquisitions for Dutch museums for 140 years

Founded in 1883 by a group of Amsterdam art lovers to help raise funds for the acquisition of important collections of Dutch art that were being sold off to wealthy collectors abroad at an astonishing rate, the ‘Vereniging Rembrandt’ has ever since been an important patron of public art collections in the Netherlands.

Over the years not only Dutch art was supported, but increasingly also non-Dutch art and works by contemporary artists. The ‘Vereniging Rembrandt’ is still a private association: with the support of now over 17.000 members the association helps Dutch museums collecting, researching and restoring important works of art. In this talk the new director, Geert-Jan Janse, will outline the history of the association as well as discuss its current activities.
