His most recent book is Unruly Waters: How Rains, Rivers, Coasts and Seas Have Shaped Asia’s History (2019) in which he explains why monsoons and rivers play such an important role in the history of South and Southeast Asia. Amrith is the recipient of the 2022 KNAW-Heineken Prize.

This is the kick-off of the Global Questions Seminars. All staff members of the Institute for History are invited. There will be drinks afterwards.

Global Questions Seminar

The motto of the Institute for History’s research programme is ‘Global Questions, Local Sources’. Across all areas and time periods, researchers of the Institute focus on important processes such as migration, colonialism, urbanization, and identity formation. The ‘Global Questions Seminar’, for which we invite distinguished international colleagues to discuss the interplay between global and local issues from the past, brings all staff members of the Institute together.
