Bilingualism has attracted widespread attention both in cognitive science and allied areas for certain reasons. It has provided an easy and natural model to examine some hypotheses about cognitive neuroplasticity and also mechanisms of control. Both psychological and neural data confirm this in a wide range of subjects in different cultures.

In this presentation, I will examine more recent developments in cognitive theories of bilingualism with a focus on experience-dependent cognitive control. I will examine the idea that the practice of bilingualism indeed relates linguistic and non-linguistic control systems in the brain and it aids in many more social actions. The presentation will also cover certain individual and cultural variations to key results in the field with special references to the Indian context.
