Where are the windows, if the door is closed? This question must knowingly or unknowingly have been on the mind of Dutch merchants testing the waters of the French empire. From 1717 onwards, the French Empire was governed through the Exclusif Colonial, privileging French participation and excluding foreign interference. Despite this, merchants in the Dutch Republic succeeded in gaining and keeping entry to the resources of the French Empire. This PhD project investigates who was doing this, why they were doing this, and how they achieved this. With a particularly rich source record providing detailed top-down as well as bottom-up perspectives, a comprehensive and multidimensional survey of this phenomenon can be constructed.
