The most interesting elections in Germany in years

The German Federal Elections of 26 September 2021 are expected to be the most interesting elections in the country in years. The departure of Angela Merkel as Chancellor and CDU party leader have resulted in a wide open election, in which several parties, particularly the SPD and the Greens, challenge the Christian democrat domination of German politics. The German party system is much more volatile than in the past, with at least 6 parties very likely to gain representation and current polls suggesting that no party may win more than 30 per cent of the vote.

On Wednesday 22 September 2021, the Leiden University Centre for the Study of Political Parties and Representation, in collaboration with the Institute of Political Science’s research cluster on Representation, Public Opinion and Communication, organises a round table of experts. They will discuss the current state of German Federal politics, explore the long-term and short-term trends, and talk about Germany’s role in Europe in the post-Merkel era.

After a round of introduction by our panellists, there will be plenty of time for questions for the audience.
