Yael Tamir is adjunct professor of the Blavatnik School of Government of Oxford University and President of Beit Berl College. She combined a career as politician (for Labor between 1999 and 2010 and as a founder of the Peace Now movement) with academic appointments. She received a PhD in political philosophy from Oxford University and published among others Liberal Nationalism (Princeton 1993) and Why Nationalism (Princeton 2019).

Based on her recent book Why Nationalism (Princeton 2019), Yael Tamir will examine how nationalism can effectively address the issues and challenges that are caused by neoliberalism and hyperglobalism. She argues that a non-chauvinist kind of nationalism – one that revives its participatory, creative, and egalitarian virtues – is essential to democracy at its best. She will also explain why it is more important than ever for the Left to recognize these qualities of nationalism in order to reclaim it from right-wing extremists.
